SYNOPSIS
Let us take you through the stately rooms of the spookily atmospheric Victorian mansion Villa Alba to witness love, death, sex, and violence… and the two powerful women who made James, Joyce.

ABOUT

"It was basically either we make a film in a week or we cancel it... We chose the film route and we managed to make a feature film in 6 days" - Carly Wilding (Director)

Bloomsday in Melbourne and Scene Melbourne brings James Joyce’s provocative novels to life with a new immersive film, Love’s Bitter Mystery. Set in the atmospheric post-gold-boom mansion at Villa Alba in Kew, this feature focuses on a critical year in the young author’s life and how he used (and changed) episodes from his own life in his novels, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses.

To launch Bloomsday in Melbourne's June 2022 Festival celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the publication of James Joyce's Ulysses, we invite you to join us for the world premiere of our first feature film, Love's Bitter Mystery. Set in the atmospheric post-gold-boom mansion at Villa Alba in Kew, this feature focuses on a critical year in the young author’s life and how he used (and changed) episodes from his own life in his novels, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses.

Donating to a production allows the artist to continue creating and making more productions like the one you just watched!
